A huge thank you to Tom Cap for serving as our league reporter.  The following is a summary of the season in his words......Pulitzer Prize to follow!!

Weekend One.

The 2007 Season Has Begun!

Awesome weather opened our 2007 season with five games gracing the schedule. In the first game of the day at Town Forest, Andrew Hannau threw five strong innings and added a fifth inning, two run double to lead Vincents to a 4-1 win over SBLI. .Hoffman defeated AllState 14-8 in the following game at TF, then the Wildcats closed the TF play with a 8-4 win over ERA. The Wildcats were paced by 6 1/3 strong innings from Mike Leone. Kevin Abrahamsen recorded the final two outs on one pitch forcing a fly ball to Ryan Vasas who doubled off the baserunner at first. State Farm opened the Memorial field season with a tight 8-7 win over Fitzgeralds. In the nitecap,  New Country BMW knocked off Tide 15-8.

Sunday Results

The uniforms and ball suggested a baseball game between AllState and Vincents, but a football game broke out. Vincents missed a game tying 4th quarter field goal attempt, falling to AllState 17-14.  Josh Holihan hit a three run homer (field goal?) in the middle innings to highlight the AllState attack.  In other football-like action at Memorial, Tide emissed the two point conversion against Fitzgeralds, falling 14-12.

At Town Forest, in a battle of the backyard managers, Mr. Porter gained bragging rights as his ERA squad evened their record at 1-1 with a  5-4 win over Mr. Hession's Hoffman squad.  ERA got the final out withe bases juiced, and a 3-2 count on the batter. The football heme then took over at TF with the Wildcats remaining unbeated outslugging New Country 22-15. In the nitecap, State Farm beat SBLI 13-8 highlighted by an inside the park homer by Steven Patria.

Great weekend of actions guys!

Week One

The opening of the spring 2007 Babe Ruth season will not be mistaken for 1968, The Year of the Pitcher! Tuesday's night's games continued the trend of high scoring games with State Farm remaining undefeated with a 17-14 win over the previosuly undefeated Wildcats and Tide getting their first win by a 17-15 count over Hoffman in a game called aftrer five innings due to darkness.  Tide manager Brian Koscher summed the start of the season well in his post game press conference,  "This season, no lead is safe".

Wednesday's tilt between SBLI and Fitzgeralds was rained out and will be rescheduled at a date to be determined. Thursday night games found something closer to baseball scores. Josh Helmkamp overcame first inning control problems, combining with the able relief from JR Phillips and Mike Anderson to lead New Country over Vincents 7-4. At TF, ERA thumped AllState 13-4.

Weekend Two

The second weekend of play opened at Town Forest with AllState defeating Tide 6-3. Hoffman evened their record at 2-2 with a 21-9 win over SBLI. The Wildcats cleaned up on Tide 4-1 riding Kevin Abrahamsen's complete game four hitter. Offensively, the Wildcats were paced by Mike Mormile and John Yablecki with three hits each.

At Memorial, Vincents knocked State Farm from the unbeaten ranks, 12-3. Vincent's put up seven runs in the 2nd inning after two were out ,set up by base knocks from Dylan Downes and Matt Quintana. Andrew Graf and Taylor Trujillo paced the Vincent's attack with three hits apiece.  The final game of the day saw New Country trail the whole game but walk away with a win in the bottom of the 7th on Mike Anderson's rbi hit.   Luke Bradley made his first appearance of the year on the mound and pitched a shutout in the top of the 7th.  John Letscher made three stellar plays in the field to lead the New Country defense.

In Sunday action at TF, Hoffman and BMW saw a pitcher's duel between JR Phillips and John Hession who both threw complete games. Merritt Gasho's three run Inside the park homer provided the key blow for New Country as they defeated Hoffman 5-3.  AllState then beat SBLI by a count of 15-9. In the final game at the Forest, ERA played their second straight thriller winner 10-9 over State Farm.

Memorial Field saw two exciting games. In the early game, the Wildcats rallied from an 8-7 deficit going into the 7th to win 9-8 over Tide. Pacing the Wildcats were Sean Dougherty with a couble and a triple and Neil McKenna with the game winning single.  In the second game, Vincents broke open a tight game with three runs in the 6th to take a 10-5 lead, only to see the never-say-die Fitzgeralds squad push three across in the 7th before stranding the tying runs at 2nd and 3rd as the final out was made on a close play at first..

Week Two

The weekday games for week two saw our two standings leaders both roll their records to 5-1. The Wildcats defeated Hoffman 15-4 led by Mike Mormile's 4 for4 evening at the plate. Sean Dougherty, Ryan Vasas, and John Yablecki led the way on the mound. Josh Helmkmap pitched 6 2/3 innings and Mike Anderson closed the deal on two pitches to lead New Country over SBLI 8-1. Fitzgeralds used a patient attack at the plate to defeat ERA by a count of 8-6. State Farm returned to their winning ways with a 9-3 win over AllState. Steven Patria hit his second inside the park home run of the season in the State Farm win. In the final game of the week, Vincents rode three hit games from Dylan Downs and David Cap and four strong innings from Andrew Hannau to a 17-10 win over Tide.

Weekend Three

Vincents defeated Hoffman 12-9 in eight innings at Memorial on Saturday. That is hardly the story of the game though. The game featured several bizarre events beginning with a Hoffman batter breaking his nose on a foul ball. This then forced Vincents replacement player Nick Graham who started for Vincents, to move to the Hoffman side who had dropped to eight players. For several innings, Nick played for both teams when Vincents fell one player short.  When Nick was on deck for Vincents, Vincents lent a player to Hoffman to fill Nick's defensive role. The borrowed player, Taylor Trujillo, then promptly made a sensational catch in left to quell a Vincent's threat.  As for the game, Hoffman took a 9-5 lead into the top of the 7th, but Vincents scored four to tie,  then added three in the eight.  Matt Quintana's clutch pitching stranded a Hoffman runner at third in the bottom of the 7th, then, got the final two outs after Hoffman loaded the bases in the eighth.

In other action, SBLI gained their first win with a 9-6 upset of the league co-leading Wildcats. ERA won the battle of the cleaning products with a 16-13 win over Tide. Fitzgeralds beat AllState 11-4 behind the 3 hit / 9K pitching of Alex Mortillaro. New Country BMW held off State Farm 13-9 to take sole possession of the top spot in the standings.

In Sunday action, ERA defeated SBLI 14-10. Fitzgeralds rode the 5 for 5 performance of Brett Johnson to a 17-16 win over Hoffman. Paced by  the strong pitching of Dylan Sullivan, AllState beat New Country in a tight 4-2 game. State Farm held off Tide in a 13-11 contest. In the day's finale, Vincents defeated the Wildcats 10-5 behind the strong pitching of Andrew Hannau, three hits by Jon Colon and two hits by Matt Hannau.
